A rich history

Blue sapphire belongs to the corundum aluminum oxide mineral group and is said to symbolise truth, sincerity, faithfulness, and nobility. In the 20th and 21st century it has come to represent romance and royalty. Blue sapphires have had many different purposes and meanings throughout the ages, from the Ancient Greeks believing they protected the wearer from harm to clergymen wearing them to represent Heaven. Through history, art, and consumer awareness, a sapphire has come to be predominantly associated with the colour blue.

Our Sapphire LegacY

Metal Urges founder and head designer Chris Hood personally sources and selects every blue sapphire in our extensive collection. Chris travels far and wide to ethically source these beautiful blue sapphires from their source countries, upholding our mission to leave the mining communities and the communities that rely on their trade in a better state than we originally found them.

To achieve this, Chris openly pays a premium  over the local price to support the mining contacts we have and to ensure we maintain access to the highest quality blue sapphire being produced.

We are extremely proud of our legacy, financial support and other contributions we’re able to make to many local economies globally.

Sourcing Blue Sapphires

Natural blue sapphire and untreated blue sapphire are becoming a very rare commodity due to high demand and complex geopolitical issues  among source countries.

If sapphire deposits are situated in areas that are too inaccessible, isolated, politically unstable, or environmentally extreme they will not be mined. The main mining areas for blue sapphire currently are Sri Lanka, Cambodia, India, Madagascar, Tanzania, Australia, Thailand, the US and of course Tasmania. Blue sapphires and sapphires of most varieties can often be tested and traced back to their country of origin.

This is called origin determination and Metal Urges provides this service for all clients in relation to their blue sapphire jewellery.
